The Torch for Sochi 2014 is due to be lit in the town on March 1 and a series of events is being arranged to mark the occasion, including in neighbouring Aylesbury.

These include gala performance at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre, one of a number of community celebrations across the town, which will tell the story of the Paralympic Movement and highlight Anglo-Russian cultural connections.

A budget of £405,000 ($662,000/€483,000) has been allocated for the events.

"There will also be a school road-show where we will take the Paralympic Torch to inspire children ahead of the flame lighting," Ian Barham, the Buckinghamshire Legacy Manager, told The Bucks Herald.

"It is about celebrating Stoke Mandeville and the birth and growth of their involvement.

"It will be a televisual event but we want to make sure the people of Aylesbury can all be involved with the celebrations."

Bradley Hemmings, creative director of the London 2012 Paralympic Opening Ceremony, has been recruited to design a concept for the event that it is hoped will showcase Stoke Mandeville around the world.
