The World Taekwondo Federation, the sport's governing body, established the Taekwondo Peace Corps in 2008 to provide more opportunities for youngsters in developing countries.

This Taekwondo Peace Corp team arrived in Fiji on  July 11 and are due return to South Korea on August 20.

These volunteers of Peace Corp are all studying taekwondo at various universities in South Korea and have the taekwondo instructor license.

For the past one month, they have been actively participating in taekwondo classes at International School Suva, Suva Grammar School and USP to encourage the sport as a healthy sport for all age groups from children to adults.

In addition, they have also provided taekwondo training to the Fiji military.

Taekwondo is an Olympic and Pacific Games sport offering eight gold medals for men and women, making a total of 16.

FASANOC President Reg Sanday revealed that FASANOC has prioritised sports like taekwondo as part of its bid to lift Fiji's medal tally at the Pacific Games.

The Taekwondo Peace Corps volunteers will be part of the Asian night of the Hibiscus Festival in Suva next week.
