Ghanaian weightlifter threatens to commit suicide

22:04 Some heart wrenching news has just come in that Ghana's 17-year old weightlifter Juliana Arkoh has allegedly threatened to commit suicide if her daily allowance is not paid to her.

The threat, confirmed by Ghana's Chef de Mission for the Games Arko-Dadzie, was made to Nanjing 2014 officials and has led to the IOC requesting she be put under observation while counsellors talk to her because of her mental state. 

According to Arko-Dadzie, the IOC asked the matter to be treated as an internal team issue but has set an August 25 deadline for Ghana to pay her all her per diems.

"I have written to the Ministry of Youth and Sports,the National Sports Authority and the Ghana Olympic Committee to facilitate the per diem of our athletes just like they did during the Commonwealth Games," he told Happy FM. "I am hopeful they will deliver before the 25 August deadline."

The 17-year-old weightlifter's complaints include being owed expenses since 2013 and her forced absence from the Commonwealth Games.

Another Olympic location, Sochi, is also hosting a Formula One race later this year, lest we forget. On the 100th anniversary of the last Russian Grand Prix, it will take place on October 12 at the Sochi Autodrom.

21:30 IOC President Thomas Bach has been awarded an honorary professorship from the Nanjing Sport Institute here in Nanjing today.

The Nanjing Sport Institute is situated in Zhongshan Mountain National Park in eastern Nanjing. It occupies an area of over 40 hectares, with a floor area of over 184,000 square kilometres. It is a tertiary institution that cultivates different sports talents through teaching, training and scientific research.

On receiving the honour, Bach said: "It is in everybody's interest that we get the couch potatoes off the couch. We should make everyone aware that a healthy mind in a healthy body leads to healthy citizens in a healthy state," President Bach said. "Your institution continues to innovate and has done wonderful work not only in this city, but also in the Province of Jiangsu, nationally and internationally."

The Britain was the top performer on three of the apparatus - floor, vault and uneven bars - and took the win with a total score of 84.725.

Second place goes to Russia's Nikita Nagornyy who was some way behind the leader on 83.050 while United States' Alec Yoder takes the bronze. 

21:10 Just four races went ahead in the sailing today after a light fickle breeze on the race area failed to reach the required limit for 20 boys and 21 girls to race.

We did see action in the men's and women's byte cll one person dinghy, however, with Dutch world champion Odile Van Aanholt making the most of the opportunity with two wins.

Quote marks"I did good. I got two bullets so I am really happy. Both starts were really good and then from there I just took the right side and I was fast. I just tried to stay in the pressure and make the boat go fast and that is the key.

"Everyone is really good, you'll see the results aren't that consistent but everybody has good races and bad races and that shows that everyone here is really talented."

The men's races saw two separate winners as Singapore's Bernie Chin and the Virgin Island's Scott McKenzeie took a bullet apiece.

The biggest gainer of the day was Brazil's Pedro Correa, who's pair of third places gave him a 17 point lead over closest rival Pavle Zivanovic of Croatia.

21:04 Looking back on that Michael Payne revelation and it's good to remember that one city planning on holding a Formula One street race, of course, is Baku, the location for the inaugural European Games next June.

As was exclusively revealed by insidethegames in April, the race, which will be known as the Formula One Grand Prix of Europe, will be held on a yet-to-be-specified date in 2016. It will embrace all parts of the Azerbaijani capital, with it hoped the blend of spectacular medieval sites with a modern, iconic skyline, as well as the spectacular views across the Caspian Sea, will create a backdrop fit to rival other famous street circuits on the Formula One calendar.

The Brazilian overcame Mexico's Jose Ruben Nava Rodriguez in a breathtaking  under 63kg final, winning by just a single point at 7-6.

Bronze medals went to the losing semi-finallists of The Netherlands' Nabil Ennadiri and Great Britain's Christian McNeish.

20:45 We're coming to the closing stages of the day's badminton action over at the Sport Institute Gymnasium the mixed "mixed" doubles has been on court this evening which sees one boy and one girl from different nations picked randomly to compete with one another throughout the competition.

This is a new idea by the IOC with a goal of promoting friendship among youth from differing backgrounds. It also makes play that little bit harder, especially getting over the language barrier...

The 16-year-old scores just one point in her final with Turkey's Fatma Saridogan but it's enough to separate the two competitors with the Turk failing to register in probably the closest contest of the whole taekwondo competition.

Belgium's Laura Roebben and Russia's Tatiana Kudashova collect the bronze medals.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal20:15 Bozhidar Dimitrov Andreev of Bulgaria wins gold in the men's 69kg weightlifting.

The Bulgarian added to his 133kg in the snatch with a lift of 167kg in the clean and jerk to win on 300kg.

Despite leading after the snatch Russia's Viacheslav Iarkin could only lift 160kg in the clean and jerk (hardly "only" but you know..) to finish second.

20:01 We're into the finals of the taekwondo over at the International Sports Expo. Turkey's Fatma Saridogan is looking to take gold in the women's under 55kg final where she faces Croatia's Babic Ivana. 

The second final sees Mexico's Jose Ruben Nava Rodriguez up against Brazil's Edival Marques Quirino Pontes in the men's under 63kg final.

19:43 We have action in the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium where the men have taken to the apparatus for the artistic gymnastics all-around final. 

There are 18 gymnasts in the final, split into groups of six. Great Britain's Giarnni Regini-Moran leads the way as it stands after a strong start on the floor. Hungary's Botond Kardos isn't far behind after closing the gap on the pommel horse.

19:30 A quick update from the table tennis and it was Japan's Yuto Muramatsu who booked his spot next to China's Zhendong Fan in the men's singles final.

The Japnese "chopper" beat Brazil's Hugo Calderano 4-1 in their semi-final encounter.

19:27 Now in the pool we have the the men's 4x100m freestyle final. China were disqualified in the preliminary stages of this event due to a mistake on the change over. That leaves the gold medal wide open.

Shen Duo takes the gold in 53.84. Just behind her comes Hong Kong's Siobhan Bernadette Haughey with Duo's team mate Yuhan Qiu just 0.04 behind her in third.

19:15 It's medal ceremony time at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre Natatorium with Kenyan long distance runner, considered one of the most accomplished of all time, Paul Tergat, handing out the men's 100m butterfly medals. 

19:05 We're in the closing stages of the men's 69kg weightlifting competition over at the International Expo Centre.

Russia's Viacheslav Iarkin led after the snatch with a best of 134kg. Bozhidar Dimitrov Andreev of Bulgaria wasn't far behind with 133kg while Andres Mauricio Caicedo Piedrahita of Colombia finished with 132kg.

18:59 Semi-final action has wrapped up in the rugby sevens with France and Argentina set to meet in tomorrow's final.

Argentina continued their superb form here in Nanjing as they beat Kenya 19-12, while France secured yet another win over Fiji, this time winning by 34 points to 12.

Ohh no, sorry, China have just won another gold! Zhuhao Li is the man to do it as he flies to victory in the men's 100m butterfly. 

His time of 52.94 is just 0.03 seconds ahead of Russia's Aleksandr Sadovnikov. So nearly another dead hear there. It just shows how important the little things are in elite sport.

Bronze is sealed by Australia's Nicholas Brown who is a massive 0.24 behind them winner...

This time it's Ambra Esposito (another Italian) who ties for gold with America's Hannah Moore in the women's 200m backstroke. The America was slightly ahead coming into the final 50m but Esposito added another gear as the pair came home in 2:10.42.

This one is picked up by Alina Moseyko as she follows in the footsteps of team mate Ivan Ilin.

The Russian beat Italy's Chiara Crovari in the final of the women's individual sabre.

Bronze was won by Hungary's Petra Zahonyi.

The Iranian scored ippon after the three minute mark to defeat Kyrgyzstan's Rostislav Dashkov in the final.

There was just one bronze medal in this contest and it was won by Germany's Domenik Schonefeldt

18:28 Chinese favourite and world number one Zhendong Fan has booked his spot in the men's table tennis final after a comfortable 4-0 win over Taiwan's Heng-Wei Yang. 

Fan will face either Hugo Calderano of Brazil or Japan's Yuto Muramatsu in the final.

The Japanese player is a "defensive chopper" a rare sight in modern table tennis but a joy to watch when it's done well. A final between him and Fan would be a brilliant spectacle, but there's now ruling out the Brazilian.

The Polish fencer edged Chun Yin Ryan Choi of Hong Kong is an agonisingly close final

The Croatian beat Bosnia and Herzegovina's Aleksandra Samardzic in the women's under 78kg final.

The Italian had swam in the earlier finals heat with her time faster than that of the Spaniards.

The 800m freestyle sees only finals taking place across a number of heats. The fastest swimmer in the heat takes the gold.

Duadarella finished in 8:35.39 while Perez Blanco clocked in at 6:36.95.

17:58 Canada will play Australia in the women's rugby sevens final after the team defeated hosts China in an extremely tense semi-final at the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games Sports Park.

The teams were tied at 14-14 at the break but it was the Canadian's who came out on top in the second, scoring 12 points to China's 5 to book a spot in tomorrow's final.

China play United States for bronze.

- Florian Burgaud sounds happy with his bronze medal in the men's individual foil.

17:40 France's Enguerand Roger has taken bronze in the men's individual foil with a 15-11 victory against South Korea's Myeong Cheol Seo. 

The Frenchman put in a superb second round performance to pull back from 9-6 down and win the bout.

Japan's Misaki Emura is now up against Petra Zahonyi of Hungary in the women's individual sabre bronze medal final.

17:30 The table tennis semi-finals have seen Hong Kong's Hoi Kem Doo progress to the final after a 4-1 win over America's Lily Zhang. Doo will face Chinese favourite Gaoyang Liu in the final after her 4-1 win over Miyu Kato of Japan.

17:25 In the rugby sevens, Australia have stormed into the final with a 33-0 thrashing of the United States. The second women's semi is a thrilling affair with China pitted against Canada. The score is currently tied at 19-19.

17:20 We're into the semi-final stage of the table tennis and rugby sevens now, while bronze medal matches are being held in the fencing.

17:01 Matches in 3x3 basketball are up and running at Wutaishan Basketball venue as women's preliminary Pool action continues. 

Germany won the first fixture 17-9 against Syria while Taiwan came through a close encounter with Thailand to win 14-10.

It wasn't so tight in the third game where United States have just beaten Singapore 21-2.

16:40 Badminton singles play is coming to an end for the day over at the Sport Institute Gymnasium with just one fixture left on court. 

Tomorrow sees the start of the quarter final matches with the top ranked played from each of the eight groups progressing to this knockout stage.

Japanese top seed Akane Yamaguchi is the qualifier in the women's Group A with Ruselli Hartawan of Indonesia, Chia-Hsin Lee of Taiwan, Gaeun Kim of South Korea, Tsz Yau Ng of Hong Kong, Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand, Clara Azurmendi Moreno of Spain and Bingjiao He of China all progressing to the quarter-finals.

16:25 Those results see Argentina pick up its first medal of the Games and Russia jump ahead of China atop the medals table.

16:18 It looks like a certain IOC President was there to witness Nien-Hsin Chiang lift her way to gold as he is seen talking to IWF President Tamas Ajan.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal16:15 And there we have it. Nien-Hsin Chiang lifts 115kg in her final clean and jerk attempt to take the gold in the women's under 58kg division.

She finished with a total of 203kg to top Russia's Anastasiia Petrova. The Russian had gone as heavy as 110kg in the clean and jerk but was outshone by the girld from Taiwan.

Argentina's Sasha Nievas takes the bronze on 178kg.

16:00 We're into the closing stages of the weightlifting and Russia's Anastasiia Petrova currently leads with a combined total of 185kg. The Russian lifted 88kg in the snatch and her first attempt in the clean and jerk saw her clear 100kg.

Argentina's Sasha Nievas sits in second on 178kg, however, Taiwan's Nien-Hsin Chiang is yet to lift in the clean and jerk. Chiang led after the snatch with an impressive lift of 88kg. Her first attempt in the clean and jerk will be at 110kg.

15:45 Tennis quarter-finals are being played over at the Tennis Academy as we progress to the business end of the women's doubles,

Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine and partner Iryna Shymanovich of Belarus are looking for a berth in the semi-finals as they take on the Czech Republic's Simona Heinova and Marketa Vondrousova.

The second quarter-final pits Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko and Lithuania's Akvile Parazinskaite against Paraguay's Liz Camila Giangreco Campiz and Domenica Alejandra Gonzalez Palau of Ecuador, while America's Sonya Kenin and Mexico's Renata Zarazua Rockstul take on Australia's Naiktha Bains and Priscilla Hon in the third.

The final quarter-final has Anna Bondar and Fanni Ivett Stollar of Hungary up against Russia's Daria Kasatkina and Anastasiya Komardina.

The is also second round action in the men's singles.

15:33 Equestrian is finally underway here in Nanjing with the international team event the first to take to the Xinzhuang Equestrian venue.

Six teams will battle for placings in today's event before the final tomorrow.

This event sees six teams (one from each continent) made up of a maximum of five rider/horse combinations. The riders take it in turns to jump a series of obstacles with each team's score determined by the sum of the penalty points incurred by the three riders with the lowest penalty points in the team.

15:21 We've had our usual afternoon of judo competition taking place at the Longjiang Gymnasium today with medal finalists all set for this evening.

Croatia's Brigita Matic will go head to head with Bosnia and Herzegovina's Aleksandra Samardzic for gold in the women's under 78kg contest, while Kyrgyzstan's Rostislav Dashkov and Iran's Ramin Safaviyeh battle for gold in the men's under 100kg.

These are the last two individual judo gold medals of the Youth Olympic Games with the mixed team competition set to take place on Thursday.

15:00 The next of our finals have begun here with women's 58kg weightlifters beginning their campaign for gold safely away for the rain inside the International Expo Centre.

There will be no adding to the host's double gold from Sunday's weightlifting action with no Chinese competitors present in this contest.

There will, however, be strong support for Taiwan's Nien-Hsin Chiang who is a strong favourite for gold alongside Russia's Anastasiia Petrova. 

14:45 There was no change in the men's leaderboard following our golfing update earlier with Sweden's Marcus Kinhalt tied for the lead with Australia's Brett Coletta.

South Korea's Soyoung Kim dropped a shot in the women's and now shares a one stroke lead with Taiwan's Ssu-Chia Cheng, Japan's Maria Shinohara and Italy's Virginia Elena Carta on three under par.

- A kindly reminder by Venezuelan beach volleyball head coach Mauro Hernández of Rolando Hernandez and Jose Gregorio Gomez's victory over Poland. 

That match actually happened yesterday but thank you for the reminder Mauro.

The Venezuelan duo actually won again today, beating Austria's Moritz Pristauz-Telsnigg and Johannes Kratz 2-0.

There were also wins for the Indonesian pairing of Ashfiya/Rendy, Bertnsen/Mol of Norway, Art/Oleg of Russia, Kovalov/Oleh of Ukraine, J.surin/N.banlue of Thailand and Cairus/Vieyto of Urguay in the men's competition.

Czech Republic's Valkova/Adamcikova, Sakalia/Eti of Tuvalu, Davidson/Ward of Trinidad and Tobago, Arnholdt/Schneider of Germany, Michelle/Erika of Paraguay, Yurtsever/Cetin of Turkey and Kawfong/Tangkaeo of Thailand secured wins in the women's as Pool action continues at the Sports Park Beach Volley venue.

14:07 The men's individual foil competition has produced four semi-finallists following a manic morning of fencing action.

Hong Kong's Chun Yin Ryan will compete against France's Enguerand Roger in the first of the two semis while Myeong Cheol Seo of South Korea takes on Poland's Andrzej Rzadkowski in the other.

Action is just getting underway in the women's sabre event with Pool play set be followed by a round of 16 and the quarter-finals before we resume in the men's.

13:54 It was slightly more straight forward for Taiwan's Hen-Wei Yang in his table tennis quarter-final with Germany's Kilian Ort as he strides to a 4-0 victory for progression to the semis.

13:50 A big cheers goes up as Zhendong Fan takes the win in the table tennis. A truly brilliant quarter-final encounter and a valiant effort by Ka Tak Hung.

Fan's quality shone through in the end, however, as he progresses to this evening's semi-finals.

13:45 A large mass of Chinese press have just gathered around me in the Media Centre as we watch the final few moments of an epic table tennis encounter between world number three Zhendong Fan and Hong Kong's Ka Tak Hung.

Sweden's Marcus Kinhult and Australia's Brett Coletta hold a one shot lead in the men's competition as they enter the clubhouse at six under. Thailand's Danthai Boonma finishes his round one shot behind on five under.

Soyoung Lee of South Korea leads by a stroke in the women's contest coming into the final few holes.

Italy's Virginia Elena Carta is one behind after finishing her round on a three under 69.

13:30 It has just occurred to me that the Nanjing mascot bears a striking resemblance to the minions in the movie 'despicable me'.

The little terrors proved a massive hit in the movie blockbuster with Nanjinglele receiving much the same popularity here at the Youth Olympic Games.

13:20 Music has just broken out here at the Main Media Centre as a line of press comes bundling through the door, followed by a couple of tiny Nanjinglele.

The little guys ignite a mass scrum in the middle of the room as photographers push through to grab a number of "snaps".

13:10 All of the day's rowing action has come to an end at the Xuanwu Lake Rowing-Canoe venue with athletes now in place to compete in tomorrow's finals.

Paraguay's Alejandra Alsonso, France's Camille Juillet, Belarus' Krystsina Staraselets, Greece's Athina Maria Angelopulou, Bulgaria's Desislava Georgieva and Lithuania's Sonata Petrikaite will all race in the women's single sculls A final.
 
The men's A final sees Poland's Mateusz Swietek, Great Britain's Chris Lawrie, Germany's Tim Ole Naske, Canada's Dan de Groot, Azerbaijan's Boris Yotov and Cuba's Orlando Sotolongo all gunning for gold.

The women's pairs final has boats from the United States, Chile, Romania, Canada, China and Poland competing for gold, while Austria, Turkey, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Croatia all go in the men's.

It'll be an exciting day on the waters tomorrow, that's for sure.

12:55 Seeding in the BMX has come to an end at the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games Sports Park.

The Netherlands' Niek Kimmann topped the listings the men's race while Domenica Michelle Azuero Gonzalez of Ecuador went quickest in the women's.

The BMX competition will continue throughout the day with the finals due to take place just before 18:00.

12:43 A great result for Kenya in the rugby sevens as they record a 17-12 victory over Fiji.

Despite the loss Fiji will still progress to the semi-finals where they take on France.

The pair met in yesterday's group stages with the French coming out on top in that encounter. The other semi-final sees Kenya take on a particularly strong looking Argentina side in what should be a brilliant rugby sevens affair.

12:34 After some earlier delays in the sailing, race three of both the Byte Cll men's and women's one person dinghy have taken to the water.

Finland's Alexandra Dahberg enjoyed a successful day at Lake Jinniu yesterday after taking a pair of bullets on day one of racing.

Brazil's Pedro Correa was the best of the boy's after taking first and fourth in yesterday's action. He sits just one point clear of Malaysia's Asri Azman, however, with all still to play for here in Nanjing.

12:30 We've got a brilliant quarter-final encounter over in the table tennis at the minute. Chinese favourite Gaoyang Liu is currently 2-1 up against Taiwan's Ssu-Hua Chui with the fourth game tied at 7 apiece. 

America's Lily Zhang and Hong Kong's Hoi Kem Doo have already booked their spots in the semi-final with Japan's Miyu Kato taking on Croatia's Lea Rakova in the quarter-final.

Golfing history made in Nanjing

12:00 Apologies for our below par golfing coverage this morning, there are some difficulties discovering what is happening down at Zhongshan International Golf Club from here in the Main Media Centre.

We do know, however, that the first hole-in-one in Olympic history has been recorded by Canada's Tony Gil on the third hole. The Canadian hit a beautiful seven iron right down the throat of the 164-yarder. A magical shot by the 16-year-old. 

Now you'd usually be buying the boys a pint in the pub after the match. I'm not sure that's the case here, though...

First gold of day three goes to Switzerland on the rifle range

Nanjing 2014 gold medal11:30 Sarah Hornung of Switzerland holds her nerve to win the first gold of the day, and the first of the Games for her country. She sets a score of 207.8 to win the 10m air rifle shooting.

Martina Lindsay Veloso of Singapore takes the silver medal, while bronze goes to Julia Budde of Germany.

11:22 A couple of rugby sevens results to bring you while we await the shooting finale. France ran out 28-7 winners over Japan in the end, while unbeaten Argentina have since won 33-10 over the US. Fiji versus Kenya is the final pool match.

11:11 Sarah Hornung of Switzerland led after qualifying, and she still leads now in the 10m air rifle final. Her country is yet to win a medal, but she could claim a golden one? Martina Lindsay Velosa of Singapore currently lies in second place.

The shooting final begins at 11:00. As does the first of the girl's singles quarter-finals in table tennis. It will be Doo Hoi Kem of Hong Kong up against Adina Diaconu of Romania in the opening clash.

The eight quarter-finalists come from eight different countries. But the sole Chinese player, Liu Gaoyang, is unsurprisingly the gold medal favourite. She will play Ssu-Hua Chiu of Taiwan in the final match of the four.

10:32 Australia will play the US in the rugby sevens semi-final after defeating Canada 21-5 in the final pool match a few moments ago. But the Canadians are also through and they will face the tournament's surprise package, host nation China, in the other last four match this afternoon.

Now onto the final round of boy's matches, with France taking an early 7-0 lead against Japan.

10:24 Qualification for the first final of the day, in the girl's 10m rifle shooting, has finished. Sarah Horning of Switzerland leads the top eight into the final, with Najmeh Khedmati of Iran and Julia Budde of Germany lying second and third respectively. 

The final begins at 11:00.

10:16 Another innovative sport being showcased here in Nanjing is hockey 5s. The two pool stages continue a little later on today. There was a great win for Zambia yesterday, as documented in the report below... It describes their performance using a word I am somewhat ashamed to say I have never heard before: "insouciantly". Here is the dictionary definition...

The big result of Day 2 came from Zambia's men who insouciantly danced to an 8-1 win against European hockey giants Germany, with Alfred Chola Mbande contributing a total of four goals. After the final whistle, the Zambian men cheered their women's team to a strong middle third against New Zealand but it wasn't enough to deny the Blacksticks victory.

Meanwhile, the world's top two women's hockey nations put their stamp on the Hockey5s competition as the Netherlands opened their campaign with double digits against Fiji, while Argentina secured their second shutout in as many matches.

The final women's match was the closest match in the competition yet, as China wrestled down Uruguay with a pair of goals from Zhang Jinrong.

On the men's side, four goals from Mackenzie Warne guided Australia to victory over Bangladesh, while Spain showed excellent tactical discipline in a lively encounter to take victory against Canada. With this, Spain also took the top of the table in the men's Pool A.

New Zealand and Mexico concluded today's action at the hockey venue, with the Kiwis storming to an 8-1 win that sees them sit atop Pool B at the end of today.

Aruba flag10:04 Aruba, in case you are wondering, is a tiny island in the southern Caribbean Sea, located about 29 kilometres off the north coast of Venezuela. It is one of the four constituent countries that form the Kingdom of The Netherlands, along with Curaçao, Sint Maarten and The Netherlands itself. 

Recognised by the IOC in 1986, they have competed at all seven Summer Olympics since but are yet too win a medal. The island is one of nine National Olympic Committees to come from a territory rather than a sovereign state. 

What are the other eight I hear you ask? US territories American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. British territories Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, and the Cayman Islands, and Hong Kong, considered a "special administrative region of China".

09:54 And we can now confirm that the US are through to the girl's rugby sevens semi-finals because China have dispatched Spain 45-0. It shows how much the game has evolved that both the US and China have made the last four of any global rugby competition.

The final match between already qualified Australia and Canada will determine who faces who in the two matches later on today, with the first one beginning at 17:00.

Meanwhile, Sarah Hornung of Switzerland's leads midway through the 10m rifle shooting qualification. Still all to play for in the early stages there, however. 

09:47 Enough history, and moving on to the other sport entering the Olympic programme at Rio 2016, rugby sevens. The US have won the first match of the day, 26-0 in the girl's event over Tunisia. That gives the North American side a great chance of claiming the final semi-final slot, with China, Canada and Australia having already guaranteed themselves the other three.

China are facing Spain now. If they win, the US will go through on points difference. 

09:39 Today is the first Olympic golf competition of any sort since St Louis 1904. Only male individual and team events took place then, but four years earlier in Paris, both men's and women's individual competitions took place. 

The 13 medals won over those two Games were shared exclusively between players from Great Britain, United States and Canada, with France and Greece the only other countries to have even participated. And the odd number of medals, before someone asks, is because two men's bronzes were awarded in 1904.

A lot has happened in the last 110 years, in golf and the rest of the world. China, for example, was still experiencing the last throws of the Qing Dynasty, before a nationalist surge led by modern Chinese hero Sun Yat Sen. His tomb is here in Nanjing.

09:32 There are three gold medals available in the inaugural Youth Olympic golf competition. There will be a mixed team event later in the Games, but for now it is the first of three days of individual strokeplay action, with both male and female events taking place.

09:23 Qualification in the shooting for this morning's final has already begun. This time yesterday, IOC President Thomas Bach had checked in to watch Ukraine's Pavlo Korostylov win the 10m pistol with an excellent score of 203.4 points.

"Great match! You have been really consistent and focused," Bach apparently told him afterwards. "Congratulations! We hope to see you again in Rio de Janeiro, in two years!"

Bach also met the ISSF President Olegario Vazquez Raña during his visit, as well as secretary general Franz Schreiber, and members of the shooting family. 

Here he is with both officials as well as the gold medal winner. Amazingly, he doesn't appear to have taken a selfie... Perhaps it was a little too early in the morning even for him...?

09:08 Another 14 sets of medals are available today. No triathlon this morning so the first one will come at the Fangshan Shooting Hall with the girl's 10m air rifle final starting at 11:00. There will be weightlifting action this afternoon and then the usual medal rush this evening, with four to be won in the pool, plus two each in taekwondo, fencing and judo. There will also be another weightlifting event, as well as the men's all around final in artistic gymnastics. 

Plenty of important non-medals action as well, with the penultimate day of the rugby sevens and rowing competitions, while we are getting into the business end of the table-tennis singles.

Last but by no means least, it is also the first day of action in two other sports: golf and equestrian.
