Maxwell-Milne, born in 1992, worked for Showstars, a London-based crew company subcontracted by FiveCurrents to work on both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

“It is with our deepest regret that we have to report the loss of Micah Maxwell-Milne," a statement from Showstars said.

"Micah was killed in a car accident in Baku, Azerbaijan whilst working on the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the European Games.

"There were three other technicians involved in the same accident who have since been air-lifted to Turkey with serious injuries.

"Our thoughts and best wishes go out to all of them and their families and loved ones.

"In particular Micah’s parents Stuart and Max, his sister Saffron and his girlfriend Ezgi."

This follows a collision between a Ford Transit and a Mercedes in Heydar Aliyev Prospekti on Tuesday (June 23) which also reportedly killed the Azerbaijani driver.

One of the others involved was also from Britain, it has been reported locally, while the other two were from Nepal and Estonia.

The incident was first confirmed yesterday in a FireCurrents statement expressing "great sadness" as well as thanks to Baku 2015, the Azerbaijan Ministry of Health and the British Embassy in Baku.

They were all of "great assistance in delivering medical care and consular services for all involved".

The European Olympic Committees also claimed they were "deeply saddened by this tragic incident".

"The entire European Olympic family is united in offering our most heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of those involved," a statement added.

"Now is the time to show solidarity in these difficult circumstances.”

When asked about the incident this morning, Baku 2015 chief operating officer Simon Clegg said: "It was obviously a tragedy and we offer our condolences to the families involved."

This follows the crash involving three Austrian swimmers who were hit by a bus while walking through the Athletes' Village before the Opening Ceremony, which left 15-year-old Vanessa Sahinovic with severe injuries.

Austria then went on to win an unexpected and emotional silver medal in the synchronised swimming event, which they dedicated to Sahinovich, which came after Austrian coaches admitted they had considered withdrawing from the Games.
