Sierra Leone National Olympic Committee (NOCSL) President Patrick Coker congratulated the newly-appointed national executive of the Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL) for conducting “peaceful and exemplary elections” in welcoming members to his office in Freetown.

SWASAL elected a new executive, which will run the association for two years, in the city of Bo on May 23.

The executive will be headed by Frank Magnus Ernest Cole who beat his opponent Ibrahim Babatunde Sesay in the Presidential race by securing 50 votes to 47.

Coker stated that the NOCSL headquarters would always be open to SWASAL and its members, to make use of their facilities such as the library and resource centre.

“What you displayed in your elections reminds us of ours,” said Coker.

“That is in the spirit of sports after elections we are all united family.

“We want a good relationship to establish within the sports family and SWASAL which will enhance sports development in the country.”

Last year, NOCSL started work on its Olympic Africa project at Milton Margai College of Education and Technology (MMCET), aimed at developing sporting infrastructure in the country.

The project includes a 400 metres athletics track, football pitch and facilities for other Olympic sports such as tennis, volleyball, basketball and aquatics.

“We are looking forward to NOCSL for more partnership towards capacity building,” said Cole, who pledged SWASAL’s total commitment to enhancing sports development in Sierra Leone.

“We hope after the completion of your Olympic Africa project you will incorporate some of our members into courses like sports administration because we want our members to be well armed to the teeth regarding sports.”

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) commended the NOCSL for supporting a British Joint Ebola Task Force in setting up Freetown’s MMCET, an Ebola treatment facility.

An official from the Task Force said back in October that hundreds of lives could potentially be saved as a result of the swift approval by the NOCSL, coordinated by the IOC, to allow work to begin on the site.

NOCSL secretary general Joseph Nyande promised SWASAL that with the support of Coker he would talk with the IOC regarding the area of capacity building.

“Let us all hope and pray this Ebola virus be a thing of the past and put it behind us,” he said.

“We will help your association regarding capacitating your membership.”
