Toronto 2015 volunteers will be thanked for their efforts during the Pan American Games at a gathering in the city today ahead of the Parapan American Games, due to underway with the Opening Ceremony on Friday (August 7).

The event is set to be attended by Toronto Mayor John Tory, as well as Toronto 2015 chief executive Saad Rafi and mascot Pachi, and will include a group photo featuring the volunteers and the various dignitaries in attendance.

There will also be a photo opportunity of people trying out sitting volleyball as the Canadian city prepares to welcome 1,600 athletes for the Parapan American Games.

The volunteers will be kitted out in their uniforms, designed by leading fashion brand Joe Fresh, and representatives from the company are also due to attend the event.

The gathering itself takes place at the Nathan Phillips Square in front of the 3D Toronto 2015 sign.

Around 23,000 volunteers have been supporting both events in Toronto, helping out at venues, the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletes’ Village and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies during the Pan American Games, which came to a close on July 26.

They are then due to aid the running of the Parapan American Games, which will include host nation Canada’s largest-ever team with their contingent made up of 216 athletes.

The event recognising the contribution of the volunteers comes after the Parapan American Games Torch Relay began with two special Lighting Ceremonies, one in Ottawa and one in Niagara Falls.

The Torch will now embark on its journey across Canada where it will be carried by 250 Torchbearers during the 700 kilometre route, which will visit 12 communities.

The two Flames are then due to come together on Thursday (August 6) before the Opening Ceremony the following day.

In another boost for the eagerly-anticipated event, the International Paralympic Committee Yesterday revealed it will live stream four sports at the Parapan American Games on their website.

The upcoming Parapan American Games, which span eight days and come to an end on August 15, is set to be the largest in the event’s history.

Athletes will compete in 15 sports across 11 venues and those interested in purchasing tickets can buy seats here.

All of the sports included on the programme will also be qualification events for next year’s Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
