The event, one of six stops on the International Skating Union's Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series, will take place at the Sears Centre between October 21 and 23.

Skate America was previously held at the venue in 2014, when more than 17,000 fans turned up during the three days of action.

This was the third highest attendance since 2004 and the highest since 2010, when 23,362 people watched in Portland.

"We are excited to return to the Chicago area for this prestigious international competition," US Figure Skating President Sam Auxier said.

"The support of the skating community and the fans in 2014 made our decision to return an easy one." 

Fifty-six competitors will compete in ladies, men's, pairs and ice dance competition at the event.

The full list of skaters for the 2016 Grand Prix Series and the schedule for 2016 Skate America will be announced on June 30.

Past Skate America winners include five-time world champion and two-time Olympic medalist Michelle Kwan and Olympic champions Kristi Yamaguchi, Scott Hamilton, Evan Lysacek, Meryl Davis and Charlie White.

The other events on the Grand Prix programme are the Skate Canada International, the Rostelecom Cup, the Trophée de France, the Cup of China and the NHK Trophy.
