Australian Open champion Gordon Reid advanced to the men’s wheelchair singles final at the French Open after securing a straight sets victory over France’s Stéphane Houdet at Roland Garros.

The early stages of the opening set saw little separating the two players with the score locked at 3-3, but the British star Reid quickly gained control by securing a break of serve.

After consolidating his break, the 24-year-old was able to claim the set 6-3 to move closer to reaching the French Open final for the first time in his career.

Houdet, who had helped his nation claim the BNP Paribas World Team Cup in Tokyo last week, hit back by breaking on Reid’s first service game in the second set en route to taking a 3-0 lead.

However, Reid stormed back to dominate the remainder of the match and eventually secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

He will now face Gustavo Fernandez, who he defeated in a thrilling three set semi-final at the Australian Open.

It followed the Argentinian, who will carry his country’s flag at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Opening Ceremony, claiming a straight sets 6-3, 6-2 win over defending champion Shingo Kunieda of Japan.

Japanese second seed Yui Kamiji was beaten in the women’s singles semi-finals after a tough battle with Dutch star Marjolein Buis.

Buis had claimed the opening set on a tie-break, only for her opponent to return the favour in the second to force a decider.

The Dutch player, however, comfortably won the final set to earn a 7-6, 6-7, 6-1 victory.

She will now meet Germany’s Sabine Ellerbrock, who was a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 winner over Britain’s Jordanne Whiley in the second semi-final.
