Skate Canada have announced they will submit a bid to host the World Figure Skating Championships in 2020.

The organisation have stated that the International Skating Union (ISU) have confirmed the receipt of their intent to bid for the Championships, with the formal proposal due to be submitted in April 2017.

Should a Canadian bid prove successful it would be the 11th time the country would have hosted the annual Championships, which attracts a television audience of over 150 million viewers.

Canada last stage the Championships in London, in the province of Ontario, in 2013.

“We are thrilled to be in the running to host the ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2020,” said Dan Thompson, Skate Canada chief executive.

“Canada has a strong hosting history and we would be honoured to hold the 2020 event.

“We are proud to have held the world championships 10 times previously and we know that if the ISU brings this event back to Canada we will continue our outstanding hosting record while inspiring not only Canadians to embrace the joy of skating, but people around the world.”

Skate Canada have requested that cities interested in hosting the Championships make proposals to the bodies, with the successful city due to be selected in March 2017.
