Austria's Rio 2016 Paralympic team were given a warm welcome by a group of dignitaries from the worlds of sport and politics after returning home to Vienna International Airport.

Among the athletes present were Pepo Puch, who won the country's sole gold medal in the Brazilian city after triumphing in the Individual Championship Test Grade IB dressage competition before adding silver in the freestyle event.

Walter Ablinger and Thomas Fruhwirth, who won H3 and H4 time trial silver medals respectively in road cycling, were also in attendance, along with silver medal winning canoeist Mendy Swoboda.

President of the Austrian Paralympic Committee, Maria Rauch-Kallat, said: "I congratulate this great team very much. 

"And I'm very happy that everything went well. 

"We have all brought the team home healthy and we are proud of your achievements."

Austria won nine medals in all in Rio, one gold, four silvers and four bronzes.

Sports Minister Hanspeter Doskozil said: "It is a joy to welcome this team. 

"You maybe do not yet know what a great service you have done for Austrian sport. 

"We are very proud of you.”

Austrian Paralympic Committee Secretary General Petra Huber added:  "We are very proud to have brought a great team home again healthy and unharmed."

The event concluded with a small party before all the athletes were reunited with their families.
