Schools in London have so far applied for 90,000 tickets for this year's World Para Athletics Championships.

A ticket offer was launched last month with the aim of enabling children to attend the event in the British capital at a discounted rate.

Tickets are available for £3 ($3.69/€3.46) with the scheme backed by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.

There is still time to apply with the offer closing on March 24 at 20.17pm.

Organisers opened up a second phase for applications due to demand, with the offer originally due to end on February 10.

Accompanying adults and teachers can attend for free when accompanying the children.

All children and teachers attending will travel free of charge on Transport for London services, with a dedicated volunteer then provided for each school party upon arrival.

Championship director Niels de Vos said: "We are absolutely thrilled to have received such a massive response to the London schools ticket offer.

"Being part of the World Para Athletics Championships really is a trip of a lifetime and we know that attending a live sports event of this magnitude can really inspire a generation."

Stef Reid, who boasts two Paralympic silver medals for Britain in the F44 long jump, visited a school in London to promote the initiative.

"I know from visiting a school recently that these children are unbelievably excited to be a part of the Championships and as an athlete knowing that other people are relishing the chance to see you gives you a real lift," she said.

London will become the first city to stage both the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships and the World Para Athletics Championships in the same year.

Action will take place at the Olympic Stadium - the showpiece venue of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The World Para-Athletics Championships are scheduled for July 14 to 23, while the IAAF World Championships are set to take place from August 4 to 13.
