Hosts Spain secured fifth place in the men’s International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) European Championships in Tenerife as they defeated Poland 85-70 today.

Jordi Ruiz Jordan starred for the Spanish, scoring 30 of their points.

Israel claimed victory in the seventh-place match by the narrowest of margins, defeating Italy 23-22.

Earlier in the day, France had claimed ninth place overall with a 79-73 win over Switzerland after Lithuania had finished 11th of the 12 teams with an 82-77 win over Sweden.

Great Britain are due tomorrow defend their title in the final against an impressive looking Turkish side, while the bronze medal will be contested by Germany and The Netherlands.

Spain and Turkey were the only teams in action in the women’s European Championships that are also taking place in Tenerife, as they contested the fifth-place playoff. 

The host nation came out on top, winning the clash 66-18.

Tomorrow, Britain’s women, beaten by The Netherlands in their semi-final, will play for the bronze with France. 

This will be followed up by the gold medal match between the Dutch and Germany.
