A series of Serbian national sambo competitions have taken place in the city of Novi Sad, with more than 200 athletes featuring.

Competition took place at the Spens sport complex, a multi-sport venue in the city.

The venue will also host the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) Youth and Junior World Championships next month.

Action began with the National Senior Championships, with youth events and combat sambo competition also held.

"The fact that sambo is growing day by day and year after year in this region is confirmed not only by the significant results of Serbian athletes at the international level, but also by the number of athletes fighting at local tournaments," said Ivana Yandric, President of the Vojvodina region's sambo federation.

"More than 200 sambo wrestlers took part in the competitions in Novi Sad.

"In the beginning, we witnessed the National Championship among adults.

"Athletes fought for a place in the team, which in November will represent Serbia at the World Championships in Sochi.

"After this selection was over, we first held competitions in combat sambo, this discipline of sambo made a huge impression on the audience."

A Youth Championships was held after the conclusion of the elite sambo competitions at the venue, with organisers hailing giving developing athletes the chance to compete alongside the top field.

A traditional "Memorial of Svetozar Mikhailovich" tournament was also held, with the event a team competition among students.

The University of Novi Sad emerged as the victors.
