The Mexicans triumphed 2-1 at the Edgar Renteria Baseball Stadium in Barranquilla, securing their country's first-ever baseball crown.

Starting pitchers Hiroki Kondo and Carlos Morales Lopez took a no score into the 10th inning and Mexico got the last out in a bases loaded situation.

"It's easy to say it now, but we did come here to win," Mexico’s manager Josè Reyes said.

"Of course it wasn't easy.

"This tournament was very competitive."

Mexico scored all the runs needed to win in the top of the 10th inning.

Bernardo Heras Aripez bunted the tie-break runners to second and third.

Fabricio Macias looked at a ball before singling up the middle to score both.

Rafael Ordaz Martinez then retired Hisanori Yasuda on a grounder and despite not being able to prevent Japan's first run, he went onto walk Kento Harasawa.

Mexico called Sergio Alvarado Franco from the bullpen, but the newcomer walked the bases loaded.

The ball then went to Erick Casillas Avila, who got started with two balls.

On a 2-2 count, Kenji Nishimaki flied out to right field to end the game.

"It's baseball," Reyes added.

"I knew that a swing of the bat could change everything."

In the bronze medal game, which was also played at the Edgar Renteria Baseball Stadium, Venezuela beat South Korea 5-4.

South Korea came a long way to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning, but in the bottom of the eighth, Venezuela scored the go-ahead run thanks to some hustling along the base path.

Anthony Concepcion Hernandez ran all the way from first to third on a single by Leandro Cedeño Mendoza.

Jorma Rodriguez Subero then beat a throw to first that would have ended the inning on a double play, allowing Concepcion Hernandez to score the winning run.
