Chinese Taipei’s Yu Sheng-po set up a clash with number one seed Lee Dong-keun at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Canada Open after coming through qualifying in Calgary.

Yu got off to a good start when he advanced from a testing three-setter with Denmark’s Patrick Bjerregaard 21-15, 15-21, 22-20 at Markin MacPhail Centre.

Canada’s Miklos Kanyasi was next up and Yu enjoyed a more straightforward victory this time, prevailing 21-13, 21-9.

In the first round proper, Yu was again relatively comfortable, seeing off Seyed Mohammad Hossen Vakili of Canada 21-13, 21-5.

South Korean star Lee awaits in the last 32.

In the women’s event, South Korea’s world number 59 Sim Yu-jin takes on number one seed and home favourite Michelle Li.

Hong Kong-born Li is ranked 14 in the world in women’ singles and has more than 400 match wins under her belt, including women’s doubles and mixed doubles.

The Canada Open is due to run until Sunday (July 7) and has a total purse of $75,000 (£59,000/€66,000).

It is the third Super 100 event on this year’s BWF World Tour.

The tournament, which will see most of the top 100 in both the men's and women's draws, is the inaugural year for sponsor Sun Life.
