Elmir Aliyev got the gold medal rush started for the host nation as he won the Greco-Roman 51 kilograms title with victory over Ukraine's Sanya Yakovlev in the final.

Khasay Hasanli later battled past Germany's Deni Nakayev to top the 65kg podium.

Kanan Heybatov added to the Azerbaijani haul as he overcame Russian opponent Rustam Dolayev in the 51kg final gold medal bout before Jabrayil Hadjiyev took the 65kg honours by defeating Dolayev's team-mate Batyrbek Tskhovrebov.

Belarus also put in a strong wrestling performance today, winning gold medals in the women's 57kg and 65kg divisions.

Kristina Zdunkevich proved too strong for Norway's Ofelia Annette Hoye to secure the 57kg title and Yana Tretsiak overcame Turkey's Nesrin Basi at 65kg.

Today's results saw Azerbaijan top the wrestling medal table ahead of Russia on eight golds.

British swimmer Katie Shanahan sealed her second gold medal of this year's EYOF as she set a meeting record of 2min 11.20sec to win the 200 metres backstroke. 

Erika Francesca Gaetani of Italy did enough for silver and Sudem Denizli of Turkey claimed bronze. 

Elsewhere, Britain's Zoe Backstedt clocked a time of 14min 35.25sec to claim the girls' road cycling time trial crown.

Backstedt completed the course 19.14 seconds quicker than silver medallist Alena Ivanchenko of Russia, while bronze went to Laura Sander Lizette of Estonia.

It got better for Estonia in the boys' race as Madis Mikhels clinched the gold medal in 13:10.19.

Dario Belletta of Italy took the silver medal, five seconds adrift of the victorious Estonian, and Konstantin Aladashvili of Russia came through to earn bronze.

The event, where around 3,600 athletes are competing in 10 sports, is due to continue tomorrow.
