The world's best young wrestlers will take to the mat this week for the 2019 United World Wrestling Cadet World Championships in Bulgaria's capital Sofia.

The cadet event features the best in the under-18s category, with 16 and 17-year-old wrestlers eligible to compete.

Competition will take place from tomorrow until August 4 at the Armeets Arena.

A total of 30 gold medals are on offer, with 20 for men's events in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, and 10 in the women's categories.

The men fight at 45, 48, 51, 55, 60, 65, 71, 80, 92 and 110 kilogram levels, while the women will wrestle at 40, 43, 46, 49, 53, 57, 61, 65, 69 and 73kg weights.

While the competitors may be too young to be targeting the Tokyo 2020 Olympics next year, the strongest wrestlers will be looking to build experience on a potential road to the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Previous world cadet champions include Russia's Abdulrashid Sadulaev, who won at 76kg in 2012 and 85kg in 2013 before earning gold in the heavier category at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
