The Canadian Paralympic Committee and Canadian Blind Sports Association have announced their squads for both the men’s and women’s teams, each of who won bronze four years ago at Toronto 2015.

The women are set to be led by two-time Paralympian Whitney Bogart, the only returning member from the 2015 squad, alongside three-time Paralympian Amy Burk and Megan Mahon who competed at Rio 2016.

Four athletes - Mahon, Ruby Hammad, Emma Reinke and Maryam Salehizadeh - will be making their Parapan Am Games debut.

Canada will compete in a round-robin league alongside Brazil, Peru, Costa Rica, Mexico and the United States, with the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals.

"The Canadian women's team is confident going into Lima," head coach Trent Farebrother said.

"They know they will have to play solid defence and the rest will take care of itself."

The men’s team are taking four Paralympians to Lima 2019 - Bruno Hache, Blair Nesbitt, Doug Ripley, and Ahmad Zeividavi.

Aron Ghebreyohannes was part of the bronze-medal squad in Toronto four years ago, while Peter Parsons will be making his major Games debut.

The men will play against the US, Peru, and Venezuela in Pool B, with all eight participating nations seeded for the quarter-finals based on their round-robin performance.

"I am very proud to represent Canada alongside our coaches, teammates, and organisers with respect and determination, and to be part of such pursuit of excellence," Hache said. 

Lima 2019 is a qualifier for the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo with the top team not already qualified earning a spot.

For both teams, Canada must finish second behind Brazil or better to earn their place at Tokyo 2020.

The 2019 Parapan Am Games are due to place from August 23 to September 1 with a record 1,850 athletes set to participate.
