The International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) Combined Qualifier is set to take place over the coming four days in Tournefeuille, where Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games quota places will be awarded to six athletes per gender.

Following the 2019 IFSC World Cup season, the top 22 athletes from each gender in the combined ranking, not already qualified for the Olympics, were invited to participate in the event at the French commune's Espace Sportif des Quéfets.

It is the second qualifier for sport climbing's debut appearance at the Olympics next year.

The first was the IFSC Combined World Championships in Japanese city Hachioji in August, when eight athletes per gender earned a quota place for Tokyo 2020.

The qualification rounds in Tournefeuille will be held tomorrow and Friday (November 29), to be followed by the finals on Saturday (November 30) and Sunday (December 1).

After placing 18th at the IFSC Combined World Championships, the Czech Republic's Adam Ondra missed out on earning a quota place for Tokyo 2020.

However, with a second-place finish in the IFSC Combined World Cup rankings, he secured himself a ticket to Tournefeuille for a chance at redemption.

Japan's Keita Dohi, who earned one of sport climbing's first Youth Olympic Games gold medals at Buenos Aires 2018, is also expected to compete.

Concluding a stand-out season in both youth and senior competitions that earned him a silver medal in the IFSC Lead World Cup series, Spain's Alberto Ginés López is heading to France as well.

Another notable athlete to keep an eye on is speed climber Bassa Mawem, who is aiming to claim France's second men’s Tokyo 2020 quota place by joining his brother, Mickael Mawem, who qualified at the IFSC Combined World Championships.

While Janja Garnbret has already received a quota place for Tokyo 2020, another remains for Slovenia's female athletes.

Following strong performances and consistent appearances throughout the IFSC World Cup series, both Lučka Rakovec and Mia Krampl will be big contenders for one of the six places available in Tournefeuille.

China's YiLing Song and Indonesia's Aries Susanti Rahayu made history this year by setting women’s speed world records and they now find themselves facing a much larger historic opportunity.

Due to the varying differences between climbing disciplines, a win in the speed event is key to landing at the top of the rankings.

Buenos Aires 2018 gold medallist Sandra Lettner, meanwhile, could also have a chance at competing on the senior Olympic stage with a top spot in Tournefeuille.
