Home athlete Bassa Mawem topped the men's speed qualification standings, as action began today at the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) Combined Qualifier in Tournefeuille, France.

Mawem is aiming to claim France's second men’s quota place for next year's Olympic Games in Tokyo by joining his brother, Mickael Mawem, who qualified at the IFSC Combined World Championships in Japanese city Hachioji in August.

He came out on top today with a time of 5.687sec at Espace Sportif des Quéfets, beating nearest challenger Alfian Muhammad of Indonesia by a margin of 0.039 seconds.

Germany's Jan Hojer finished third in 6.456.

Qualification was also held today in the men's boulder and men's lead events.

China's YuFei Pan led the way in the men's boulder ahead of Czech Republic's Adam Ondra and Japan's Meichi Narasaki.

Ondra went one better in the men's lead, topping the pile, with Italy's Stefano Ghisolfi and Spain's Alberto Ginés López tied for second place.

The finals for all three men's events are due to take place on Saturday (November 30).

Action in Tournefeuille continues tomorrow, with qualification in the women's speed, boulder and lead competitions.

Following the 2019 IFSC World Cup season, the top 22 athletes from each gender in the combined ranking, not already qualified for Tokyo 2020, were invited to participate in the IFSC Combined Qualifier.
