On a day littered with tries and free-flowing rugby, the Black Ferns started the final day of competition at The Sevens Stadium with a 24-10 victory over Fiji in the quarter-finals.

Their semi-final proposition looked tricky on paper, with the current leaders of the Series, the United States, lying in wait.

But two tries from Tyla Nathan-Wong and further scores from Kelly Brazier and Stacey Waaka sealed a comfortable 24-7 victory and a place in the final showdown.

Canada had been particularly impressive, defeating France 19-7 in the quarter-finals, before taking on Australia in the last four.

In a surprisingly one-sided contest, tries from Kayla Moleschi, Ghislaine Landry (2) and Charity Williams helped deliver a 26-12 win.

But the tournament saved the best until last, with a fitting finale to the competition.

It was a perfect start for New Zealand, with Waaka crossing for a five-pointer in just the second minute.

However, this merely stung Canada into action, and tries from Karen Paquin and Julia Greenshields helped them to a commanding 14-5 lead at halftime.

The Player of the Final, Waaka, then crossed the line again, before a dramatic score in the final moments from Gayle Broughton just helped New Zealand over the line by three points.

After two rounds, New Zealand top the series standings alongside the United States on 36 points.

Cape Town, South Africa, hosts the series next week, starting on Friday (December 13).
