August 7 - Britain's Claire Cashmore (pictured) has vowed to send a powerful message to her rivals at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Swimming Championships later this month as she seeks to finally stand on top of the podium.

The 22-year-old from Kidderminster, who collected bronze in the 100 metres breaststroke at the Paralympics in Beijing two years ago, will be bidding to capture her first long course gold medal on the global stage in Eindhoven.

As well as her Beijing bronze, the arm amputee has picked up two more Paralympic bronze medals at Athens 2004 on top of two silver medals at the last World Championships in South Africa four years ago.

"I have been performing very consistently at competitions and, fingers crossed, it will all come together and I will get what I want," Cashmore said.

"My aims are to medal and I have some personal goals as well which I will keep close but I definitely want to medal."

Like for the rest of the British team, who will be striving to beat the total of 41 medals they won at the last Championships in 2006, the event is an important stepping-stone towards London 2012 for Cashmore.

"It is only two years until the Paralympics so I don’t want to concede anything and I want to keep the opposition thinking about me," she said.

"My training has been totally geared towards the Worlds because this is my main aim for the year.

"It is always just stepping stones leading into bigger and bigger competitions now with the primary one coming in the form of London 2012."

The Championships, which are due to open on August 16, are scheduled to be broadcast on Channel 4.
