New Zealand's Josh Junior remains in the lead at the Finn Gold Cup, after racing resumed today in Melbourne.

No action was possible at Royal Brighton Yacht Club on day three yesterday due to light winds in the Australian city, with three races today to help make up for what was lost.

Junior ended second, third and fifth to sit at the summit with 17 points.

He had led by 14 points going into yesterday, but his advantage is now just 13 over Britain's Rio 2016 champion Giles Scott.

The Olympic gold medallist won the final race of the day and is now Junior's nearest challenger on 30 points, after also recording finishes of 10th and fifth.

Reigning world champion Zsombor Berecz of Hungary is also in contention after moving up to third on 35 points.

He achieved the best result of the day after winning race two and also finishing fifth and third.

His victory came after Alican Kaynar crossed the line first, but the Turkish sailor was later disqualified for an illegal start and Berecz moved up a place.

Britain's Ed Wright won race one and is 14th overall.

"We went out there and ended up with some glamour conditions, and some pretty cool waves and just got into it," Junior said.

"It was shifting around a little bit and I found myself on the right side and managed a couple of good races, so I was pretty happy with the day."

Three more races are planned for tomorrow, before medal racing on Saturday (December 21).

The event has greater significance for Oceania athletes, with competition acting as the continent's qualifier for next year's Olympic Games in Tokyo.

For countries such as Canada, New Zealand and the United States, who have already secured a spot at Tokyo 2020, the competition is serving as an Olympic selection event.
