The first of three qualification events for this year's Paralympic Games is set to take place, at the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Judo American Championships in Montreal tomorrow.

The Championships at the Pierre-Charbonneau Centre offer 60 competitors from 10 countries the opportunity to gain points, which will determine their place in the world rankings and decide who reaches Tokyo.

Returning to the mat for hosts Canada is defending champion Priscilla Gagne in the women's up to 52 kilograms.

Gagne demonstrated her good form last year, claiming silver medals at the International Qualifier in Fort Wayne, United States, the Parapan American Games in Lima and the last IBSA Judo Grand Prix in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Elsewhere in women's weights, spectators can expect a resumption of the rivalry between Mexico's Paralympic gold medallist Lenia Ruvalcaba and Brazil’s world champion Alana Martins Maldonado in the 70kg.

Ruvalcaba won three of their meetings last year, but Maldonado recorded a victory in Tashkent.

There could be an all-Brazilian match-up in the women's over 70kg, as 2018 IBSA Judo American Championships winner Rebeca Silva and Lima 2019 gold medallist Meg Emmerich compete.

Emmerich is returning to competition following a wrist injury.

Mexico’s Eduardo Avila Sanchez, the men’s up to 81kg Paralympic champion, reclaimed the top of the podium last year at Fort Wayne and Lima 2019 after returning from a serious back injury.

Another Lima 2019 gold medallist, Brazil's 22-year-old Luan Pimental, will also be competing in the men's up to 73kg.

There will also be further Tokyo 2020 qualification opportunities at Grand Prix events in Nottingham in the United Kingdom on April 11 and 12, and Baku in Azerbaijan on May 11 and 12.

The IBSA Judo American Championships will be screened live on IBSA’s YouTube channel and IBSA Judo’s Facebook page.
