Germany’s Isabell Werth was victorious in the Amsterdam leg of the FEI Dressage World Cup Western European League, beating British rival Charlotte Dujardin by a narrow margin.

Riding Weihegold OLD, the horse on which she is the three-times defending World Cup champion, Werth’s total of 90.280 was the only one that broke the 90-point barrier.

Reigning Olympic champion Dujardin, on Mount St John Freestyle, was second with a score of 89.505.

Edward Gal ensured there would be a home presence in the top three as the Dutchman - atop Glock's Zonik N.O.P. - picked up 0.355 more points than fourth-placed German Jessica von Bredow-Werndl.

The victorious Werth also won an Olympic silver medal at Rio 2016 on Weihegold OLD.

She is chasing a sixth overall World Cup title to go with two individual Olympic gold medals and and five Olympic team golds.

"It all started for Weihe and me when we won the World Cup here in 2016, so Amsterdam has always been a special show for us," Werth said after recording a fifth successive victory in Amsterdam.

"It was a super atmosphere again today, the crowd were so emotional and they were on their feet when we finished so we really enjoyed that!"

Werth is set to be one of nine riders from the Western European League to contest the 2020 World Cup final in Las Vegas in April.

The rider and Weihegold OLD will have history in their sights as no pairing have ever won four consecutive World Cup titles.

The Western European League is one of four leagues that will feed into that final.
