Switzerland's Corinne Suter will look to extend her women's downhill lead in the International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Ski World Cup in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany, with her closest rival - the United States' Mikaela Shiffrin - absent.

Suter, who was fastest in training today, leads the downhill FIS World Cup standings and sits 16 points behind Federica Brignone of Italy in the super-G standings.

There is also a super-G race this weekend.

Shiffrin, whose father passed away suddenly on Sunday (February 2), will miss this weekend and it is unknown when she will return to the World Cup circuit.

The Swiss skier saw a welcome return to form in Rosa Khutor in Russia last time out in the super-G, finishing just outside the podium and has a chance to move top of the standings again.

However, Brignone was the one with the win in Russia and will be tough to beat, with team-mate Sofia Goggia also returning to the podium in that race.

Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany has been strong in training for the downhill and could have a good weekend in her home nation too.

Ester Ledecká has been off the pace in recent races but also looked good in training for the downhill and will look to regain ground lost over the past couple of weeks.

Finally, Italian pair Elena Curtoni and Marta Bassino could be potential wild cards for more podium success having finished one-two in the last downhill event, with the latter a contender in both events this weekend.

The women's downhill will take place tomorrow, with the super-G on Sunday (February 9).
