Algeria’s Abdelkarim Fergat reclaimed the men’s 55-kilogram Greco-Roman title at the African Wrestling Championships in Algiers.

Fergat had been crowned champion in the event back in 2018, but was only able to earn a bronze medal at last year’s Championships.

The home favourite won back the continental title after four consecutive victories in the round-robin competition.

Namibia’s Romio Goliath and Egypt’s Youssef Thabet settled for the silver and bronze medals in the weight division.

There was further success for the host nation when Abdeldjebar Djebbari won the men’s 63kg Greco-Roman title, after winning all three of his bouts.

Egyptian wrestlers were also impressive in the Greco-Roman events.

Haithem Mahmoud Ahmed Fahmy Mahmoud won three consecutive bouts to win the 60kg event, with Algeria’s Abdennour Laouni settling for silver.

The 67kg title was earned by Egypt’s Mohamed Elsayed, who edged out Algeria’s Ishak Ghaiou at the top of a round robin event.

A third Egyptian Greco-Roman gold was earned by Abdellatif Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed.

Mohamed won his two bouts in the men’s 130kg competition to earn the continental title.

Nigeria clinched double gold in the lightweight women’s wrestling competitions.

Esther Kolawole won the 55kg title after topping her round-robin group containing Tunisia’s Dorssaf Gharssi and Egypt’s Faten Ahmed.

Nigeria’s Odunayo Adekuoroye secured a convincing victory in the women’s 57kg final.

She eased to a comprehensive 10-0 victory over Egypt’s Eman Ebrahim.

Tunisia’s Siwar Bousetta won the bronze medal after beating Algeria’s Cheima Chebila 11-4.

The Championships will conclude tomorrow.
