Switzerland's Loïc Meillard won his first International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Ski World Cup event with a parallel giant slalom win in Chamonix in France.

Winning his fifth World Cup podium and third this season, Meillard's victory put him to the top of the World Cup standings in the event, having won in the big final against compatriot Thomas Tumler by 0.25 seconds, who took the silver medal - his second World Cup podium ever.

Germany's Alexander Schmid was a clear winner in the small final too, defeating United States' Tommy Ford with the bronze medal being his first podium.

None of the top five in the overall standings featured in the finals, with the best of them being Norway's Alesander Aaamodt Kilde who placed seventh ahead of World Cup leader Henrik Kristoffersen in 10th.

Elsewhere, France's Alexis Pinturault did not finish the course in the last 16, ending in 13th overall, losing ground on the two Norwegians at the top of the standings with Kristoffersen ahead of Kilde by less than 50 points.

The next leg of the World Cup tour will take place in Saalbach-Hinterglemm in Austria for the downhill and super-G.
