England has been announced as the hosts of the European Mixed Team Badminton Championships for 2021 as the competition comes to the city of Milton Keynes next February.

It will be the first time it has been hosted in the country since Liverpool held the 2009 Championships, having previously been held in the United Kingdom in 1978 in Preston and twice in Glasgow in 1992 and 2000.

The 2021 edition will have eight teams with two courts at the 1,600 capacity arena in Middleton Hall, within one of the United Kingdom's biggest shopping malls, centre: mk and is expected to welcome more than 500,000 people over the week of the Championships.

It will be the first of Badminton Europe's major events not to take place in a sporting venue, but in amongst cafes and shops.

"It is something brand new that we have not seen on this level before," said general secretary of Badminton Europe, Brian Agerbak.

"It is an amazing opportunity to promote the very best of our sport, and I am sure that this event will be one to remember."

Adrian Christy, Badminton England chief executive, looks forward to showing the history of the sport in the country.

"We look forward to welcoming fans from across Europe to one of the UK’s badminton hotbeds," said Christy.

"Apart from seeing the very best badminton in Europe, fans of all ages can be assured of a warm welcome, and an amazing visit, to the home of English badminton, the GB Olympic programme and the National Badminton Museum."

The hosts and holders Denmark are guaranteed their spots at the Championships with qualifying taking place in December 2020 across multiple locations.

The Championships will take place from February 17 to 21, 2021.
