Russia's Ekaterina Bukina ended Turkey's Yasemin Adar's long unbeaten run at the European Wrestling Championships to win the 76 kilograms title on the first day of women's finals in Rome.

Bukina, a Rio 2016 Olympic bronze medallist, beat her highly-decorated opponent 4-3 in the gold-medal match at the Italian capital's PalaPellicone.

Adar, a former world champion, had to settle for the silver medal on this occasion having struck gold at 75kg in 2016 and 2017, and at 76kg in 2018 and 2019.

Germany’s Aline Rotter-Focken and Norway’s Iselin Maria Moen Solheim were the bronze medallists.

There was also success for Russia today through Olga Khoroshavtseva and Khanum Velieva.

Khoroshavtseva defeated Ukraine’s Solomiia Vynnyk 10-0 in the 55kg final, while Velieva overcame home athlete Dalma Caneva 11-0 in the 68kg final.

The 55kg bronze medals went to Sweden’s Sofia Mattsson and Turkey’s Bediha Gün.

Rounding off the 68kg podium were Ukraine’s Alla Cherkasova, last year's winner, and Lithuania’s Danutė Domikaitytė.

Today's two other winners were Bulgaria’s Miglena Georgieva Selishka and Moldova’s Anastasia Nichita.

Selishka beat Ukraine’s Oksana Livach 5-3 in the 50kg final, gaining revenge for her loss at the same stage of the 2019 event.

Nichita, meanwhile, defeated reigning champion Bilyana Zhivkova Dudova of Bulgaria 5-4 in the 59kg final.

Russia’s Milana Dadasheva and Belarus’ Kseniya Stankevich were the 50kg bronze medallists, while the 59kg bronze medals went to Ukraine’s Anhelina Lysak and Russia’s Liubov Ovcharova.

Action in Rome is due to continue tomorrow.

Medals will be awarded in the women's wrestling 53kg, 57kg, 62kg, 65kg and 72kg categories.
