Members of the United States Olympic ice hockey team that beat the Soviet Union in the 1980 match known as the 'Miracle on Ice' joined US President Donald Trump at a rally in Las Vegas.

Members of the team were invited on stage by President Trump, who will seek a second term in office later this year.

Trump introduced the team to the rally by describing their victory over the Soviet Union as "one of the greatest moments in the history of sports."

Eighteen of the 20 amateur players who won the Olympic gold were present, with several wearing "Keep America Great" baseball caps.

Kelly Brooks, the daughter of the late head coach Herb Brooks, was also in attendance.

The team attended the rally after participating in a 40th anniversary celebration event in the city.

The celebration event was titled “Relive the Miracle”.

The two players who were not be present at the event on February 21 and 22 are Bob Suter, who died in 2014, and forward Mark Pavelich, who was jailed last year on assault charges and ruled mentally incompetent to stand trial, so is now in a secure treatment facility in Minnesota.

The latest celebration came five years after an event held in Lake Placid, which involved all living team members gathering for the first time since the death of coach Herb Brooks in 2003 as a result of a car accident.

The only other full reunion since 1980 was for an NHL All-Star Weekend event in Los Angeles in 2002.

The US stunned the Soviet Union, the four-times defending Olympic champions, 4-3 in the iconic game and went on to win the gold medal.

The Soviet squad consisted primarily of players who were professional in everything but name, while the US team was made up largely of college players.
