Egypt clinched gold and silver at the International Modern Pentathlon Union World Cup in Cairo.

Haydy Morsy and Eslam Hamad scored 1458 points to win, fending off the challenge from their younger compatriots Salma Abdelmaksoud and Ahmed Elgendy on 1448.

Morsy had won mixed relay gold at the same event last year, but with Elgendy as her partner.

“It feels great," Hamad said.

"It was a very exciting competition and a very close race and we had to push it home.

"The atmosphere was very lovely and lots of people came to cheer for us.

"It’s always very nice to win here in our own motherland of Egypt, and I’m very happy."

Kim Sun-woo and Jung Jin-hwa of South Korea teamed up to claim bronze with 1445, fending off strong competition from Guatemala's Sofia Cabrera and Charles Fernandez.

"Today was hard, but we ended up with a good place and it feels great," Jung said.

The next two World Cup events are due to take place in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia, with competition scheduled for March 24 to 28 and April 2 to 5.
