Constantin Schmid of Germany secured a surprise win in the qualifying event at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski Jumping World Cup in Oslo.

The 20-year-old is yet to top the World Cup podium but impressed at Holmenkollen in the Norwegian capital, at an event closed to spectators due to concerns over coronavirus.

He recorded a score of 127.7 points, finishing in front of Austria's Michael Hayboeck on 127.5 and Ziga Jelar of Slovenia on 127.2.

Despite not counting towards the World Cup standings, Schmid's result did put him in the lead in the Raw Air Tournament, which concludes on March 15.

He expressed surprise at the outcome.

"It's practically impossible that I'll still wear this leader's bib next Sunday in the final event in Vikersund as there are various athletes in the field who can jump better than me, but I'm very happy about the success today," Schmid said.

A team event is scheduled tomorrow, before the individual final takes place on Sunday (March 8).
