Nadine Messerschmidt, top qualifier for today’s women’s skeet final at the International Shooting Sport Federation’s Shotgun World Cup at Nicosia in Cyprus, followed through to claim gold.

The German, who was sixth in the 2018 European Championships, scored 52 out of a possible 60 at the Lakis Pimolophitis shooting range, having concluded the second qualifying earlier in the day with a total of 122 of her 125 clays.

Messerschmidt finished three clear of Thailand’s Sutiya Jiewchaloemmit, 16th in the current world rankings, who scored 49.

Bronze went to Slovakia’s Danka Bartekova, with Poland’s Aleksandra Jarmolinska fourth.

Home shooters Panagiota Andreou, who won bronze in the team event at the last World Championships in 2018, and Konstantia Nikolaou narrowly missed out on becoming one of the six finalists, finishing eighth and ninth respectively.

Meanwhile in the women’s trap the intermediate qualifying was topped by San Marino’s Alessandra Perilli, who hit 72 of her first 75 clays.

Spain’s Fatima Galvez, Egypt’s Suzan Gaber and Sandra Bernal of Poland all go through to tomorrow’s second qualifying and finals day on 71.

The World Cup is part of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualification process but has been impacted by the coronavirus crisis, with India among the teams to have withdrawn.
