An OCA statement said they had been "officially informed" that there were no cases in the city, which is located on Hainan Island.

As such they believe that preparations are on track for the sixth edition of the Games, which are due to run between November 28 and December 6.

"This is encouraging news for the OCA, for our 45 National Olympic Committees and, of course, for the people of Sanya City and Hainan Province," said OCA director general Husain Al-Musallam.

"We have been coordinating very closely for several weeks with the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) and the local Organising Committee and we are delighted to hear that Sanya is now free of the coronavirus, with no cases.

"We would like to praise and congratulate the Central Government, the Provincial Government and the Municipal Government for the way they have contained and controlled COVID-19 since the outbreak.

"As far as the OCA is concerned it is now full steam ahead. 

"We will continue to support our partners in China and work shoulder to shoulder in the coming weeks and months."

COC President Gou Zhongwen has written to OCA counterpart Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah to inform him that the coronavirus outbreak will not delay preparations for the Games.

Fifty-four cases had been confirmed in Sanya, with one death.

The other 53 patients have been discharged. 

There have now been more than 110,000 reported cases of coronavirus and more than 3,800 deaths.

More than 80,000 of the cases have been confirmed in China itself, as well as more than 3,100 of the people who have died.
