Athletes from six different countries secured the eight remaining taekwondo berths at Tokyo 2020 as action concluded today at the Pan American Olympic Qualification Tournament in Heredia in Costa Rica.

On day two of competition, it was the turn of athletes from the men’s under-58 kilograms and under-80kg categories and women’s under-49kg and under-67kg divisions to compete at the Palacio de los Deportes de Heredia.

In the men’s under-58kg, it was Argentina and Colombia who came away with Olympic qualification spots with Lucas Guzmán and Jefferson Ochoa winning for their respective countries.

Two countries who had been successful on day one of the tournament tasted success again in the men’s under-80kg as Moisés Hernández of the Dominican Republic and Ícaro Miguel Martins Soares of Brazil came out on top.

Andrea Ramírez Vargas won Colombia’s second Olympic spot of the day in the women’s under-49kg, with Victoria Stambaugh joining her to clinch a place for Puerto Rico.

Brazil’s Milena Titoneli finished off a successful day for her country by winning qualification in the women’s under-67kg and Aliyah Shipman guaranteed Haiti the other available slot in that category.

During the two-day qualification tournament, a total of 16 athletes from 10 countries earned quotas for Tokyo 2020.

Taekwondo at this year's Olympic Games will feature 128 fighters competing in eight weight categories: four for men, and four for women.
