USA Weightlifting (USAW) has struck its first deal with a cannabidiol (CBD) company, partnering with hemp-derived manufacturer Pure Spectrum to support its athletes through to 2023.

This comes months after USA Triathlon became the first national governing body from the United States to align with the company, signing a multi-year sponsorship.

Pure Spectrum became the first CBD company to partner with a professional sports organisation in 2018 when it sponsored the Reebok CrossFit Games.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Pure Spectrum,” USAW chief executive Phil Andrews said.

“Pure Spectrum has proven their commitment to quality and safety by manufacturing thoroughly tested products designed specifically for athletes.”

CBD is a non-psychoactive substance found naturally in a cannabis plant, which is also a legal product according to the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), allowing athletes to use CBD in and out of competition.

“As a former collegiate athlete, I know the impact CBD will have on the weightlifting community,” said Pure Spectrum chief executive and founder Brady Bell.

“Weightlifters put their bodies through an incredible amount of stress to be able to achieve the incredible results they do - CBD is a recovery product that matches that level of dedication and training.”
