On Tuesday (March 10), the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, and Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet were in attendance for the start of the demolition of the car park on what will become the site of the building.

Set to be built in the northern part of the city at Porte de la Chapelle, construction will start in 2021 and the aim is for it to be completed in the summer of 2023, according to L'Équipe.

The new building was originally planned to be erected next to the AccorHotels Arena in the south east, but the 8,000-seater hall was relocated.

Constructors and operators of the arena will be appointed after the municipal elections over the next week, with the estimated cost of construction for Arena 2 being €90 million (£81.5 million/$100 million).

There is also an aim for Paris Basketball, currently a second-tier club, to play at Arena 2 for a season before the Games. 

Jean-François Martins, a Paris Deputy Mayor in charge of Sport, said the project was "on schedule".
