Olympic silver medallist Luuka Jones and Callum Gilbert have been chosen to represent New Zealand in canoe slalom at Tokyo 2020.

Jones, who took silver in the women's K1 event at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, is set to be joined by newcomer Gilbert at the Games in the Japanese capital.

The two competitors were named on New Zealand's Olympic team at an event at Wero Whitewater Park in Auckland this week.

Tokyo 2020, provided it goes ahead, will be Jones' fourth Olympic Games after the 31-year-old competed at Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016.

Jones is due to line up in the K1 and C1, while Gilbert - who has secured a place in New Zealand's Tokyo 2020 squad after trading his job as a software engineer - will participate in the men's K1.

"I still get excited even though this is the fourth time I’ve been named,” said Jones, bronze medallist in the K1 at last year's World Championships in Spain.

"It’s an amazing opportunity to go to an Olympic Games and I’ve been really fortunate to have gone to so many.

"Competing in both events adds another element to the Olympic Games and it's an awesome opportunity to earn a medal.

"My goal is the same as it was at Rio 2016 and that’s to prepare really well and put down a performance that I can be proud of."

Gilbert said he was "over the moon" after being selected to compete at his first Olympics.

"It has been a long time coming and a lot of work has gone into this so I’m so stoked to have it made official," he added.

Canoe slalom events at Tokyo 2020 are set to run from July 26 to 31 at the Canoe Slalom Course.
