The World Skate Open Lima 2020, set to be held in the Peruvian capital from April 5 to 11, has been suspended due to provisions taken by Peru's Government in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Peru has introduced a 30-day ban on flights arriving from Europe and Asia from tomorrow, with World Skate deciding to suspend the event.

The event was supposed to feature the World Cup Skate Open Marathon as well as the Skateboarding Open Street and Park, with the competition also a qualifying event for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

A new date for the competition will be set in the future.

Carlos Canales, President of the Peruvian Cámara Nacional del Turismo, said: "World Skate and Peru have made the appropriate decisions at a very challenging time for the whole humanity.

"Let's be supportive and, after this moment of global crisis, we will be always waiting for you in Lima."

Peru currently has 43 cases of COVID-19, with more than 158,000 infections worldwide and 5,845 people dying as a result of contracting the virus to date.

The sporting calendar has been severely impacted by the outbreak, with numerous Olympic qualifiers across multiple sports postponed.
