Badminton World Federation have confirmed the Thomas and Uber Cup finals in Aarhus have been moved to August, while the continental events have been suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Thomas and Uber Cup finals had been due to take place from May 16 to 24.

The events are viewed as the men’s and women’s team World Championships, respectively.

The BWF said the events have been moved to August 15 to 23 in the Danish city.

“All relevant health, safety and logistical risks have been considered by BWF, Badminton Denmark, tournament organisers, Sport Event Denmark, and the local Aarhus Government in reaching this decision,” said Thomas Lund, BWF secretary general.

“The health, safety and wellbeing of all athletes, their entourage, officials and the greater badminton community is the top priority.

“Heightened travel and quarantine restrictions and the subsequent extreme logistical complications this has caused has also contributed to the postponement.

“While we look forward to staging this tournament at a later date, our thoughts are first and foremost with everyone affected by this pandemic around the world.”

The tournament will still be staged at the Ceres Arena in Aarhus.

The BWF has also moved their members forum and annual general meeting, which will now take place on August 20 and 21 in Aarhus.

The BWF announced earlier this month their World Tour events had been postponed until at least April 12, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Three continental events have now been suspended due to the outbreak.

This included Badminton Europe and the Ukrainian Badminton Federation postponing the European Championships, which had been due to take place from April 21 to 26.

The Badminton Asia Championships, due to be held on the same date in Manilla, has been suspended.

The event had initially been moved from the Chinese city of Wuhan, which was at the centre of the original outbreak in the country.

Meanwhile, the Pan Am Individual Championships in Peru have been postponed, with the event having been scheduled to take place from April 23 to 26.

Guatemala City was initially due to host the competition.

The events would have been one of the final chances to secure qualification for Tokyo 2020, with the deadline initially due to be April 26.

Both the VICTOR Croatian International and Peru International, which were due to take place from April 16 to 19, would have also offered opportunities for players to boost their Tokyo 2020 hopes.

The BWF said further details on the Tokyo 2020 qualification process will be provided in the coming days.
