The Czech ice hockey great died on March 20 in Stockholm.

Zabrodsky was a leading member of the Czechoslovakia team which earned gold at the 1947 World Championships.

He scored a record 26 goals in the tournament to help his team win six of their seven matches to earn the title.

Zábrodský captained Czechoslovakia the following year at the St Moritz 1948 Winter Olympics, where he scored hat-tricks in six of the team’s eight matches.

The team were forced to settle for a silver medal behind Canada on goal ratio, after a scoreless match between the two teams saw them finish the competition with an identical record of seven wins and one draw.

Czechoslovakia overcame Canada 3-2 in 1949 to help defend their world title in Sweden, with Zábr odskýagain captaining the team.

Several members of the team were jailed the following year for treason, after Czechoslovakia’s communist Government suspected players were attempting to defect during the 1950 World Championships.

Zábrodský avoided jail but was banned from the national team, although he later competed at the 1954 and 1955 World Championships, winning a bronze medal with the later.

He also competed at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina.

Zábrodský's talents were also shown on the tennis court, as he represented the country three times in the Davis Cup.

He participated in the 1948, 1955 and 1956 editions of the men’s team tennis event, ending with a record of five wins and five defeats across singles and doubles.

Ice hockey team-mate Jaroslav Drobný was his doubles partner on one occasion in 1948.

Zábrodský defected to Sweden in 1965 using fake passports, which saw him travel with his family through Hungary, Yugoslavia, and then Switzerland.

He would ultimately settle in Sweden, where he coached ice hockey club teams Leksand, Djurgarden, and Rogle between 1965 and 1971.

Zábrodský was elected into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 1997.

He was one of the inaugural members of the Hall of Fame.
