International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) European Championships could be postponed for the second time due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Championships were originally due to take place from March 20 to 27 in Moscow.

It was confirmed earlier this month that the event would move to June.

The event was due to run for eight days from June 15.

The Championships would have served as the final chance for European athletes to qualify for Tokyo 2020.

The postponement of the Olympic Games to 2021 could see the European Championships move for the second time.

“In connection with the postponement of the Olympic Games to 2021, the issue of postponing the European Championship to a later period is being worked out,” a Climbing Federation of Russia statement said.

“In this regard, the issue of delaying the Championship and Cup of Russia in Voronezh is also being worked out.

“As new information becomes available, it will be immediately communicated to regional federations.

“At the same time, we inform you that no competition dates for today can be considered final, since the situation in the world is unpredictable.

“It is obvious that the competition calendar will be substantially changed, everything will depend on the removal of quarantine measures.”

Several climbing competitions have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, including World Cup events at Meiringen in Switzerland and one in South Korean capital Seoul.

The events were moved to September and October respectively.

Also postponed due to the outbreak was the IFSC Asian Championships, due to take place in Chongqing in China.
