Japanese swimming qualifiers for the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games are now due to take place in April 2021.

The only Olympic qualifying places for Japanese swimmers were set to be available at this year's Japan Swimming Championships, scheduled for April 2.

Competition was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, however, while the Toyko 2020 Olympics were rescheduled to 2021 last month.

As reported by SwimSwam, the Japanese Swimming Federation (JASF) held a video conference call with key Board members, during which they revealed two editions of the Japan Swimming Championships were set to be organised.

This year's event has been scheduled for December, while next year's edition will take place in April.

Only the 2021 event will act as an Olympic qualifier for Tokyo 2020.

The Japan Open, originally due to be held in June, has also been rescheduled for December.

All three events will be hosted at the newly-constructed Tokyo Aquatics Centre, built to be the venue for swimming, artistic swimming and diving during the Olympic Games in the Japanese capital.

A number of other countries have had to reschedule their Olympic swimming trials, with the United States moving their contest in Omaha to June 13 to 20, 2021.

The British, Italian and South African trials are among others to be suspended.
