The Federation confirmed that the Championship, due to take place between May 1 and 16, aims to encourage the practising of taekwondo during the lockdown period caused by the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic.

Participants can use their mobile phones to send footage of their Poomsae demonstrations and participate in the tournament. 

National and international taekwondo referees will then judge the performances, with the winning entries being broadcast on the Moroccan Royal Taekwondo Federation website.

The virtual competition, the first of its kind in Morocco, hopes to raise awareness about the importance of respecting the nationwide lockdown to curb the coronavirus, while also promoting the practice of taekwondo.

Moroccan taekwondo fighters are continuing their preparations for the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games despite the lockdown caused by the pandemic.

The three Moroccan athletes who have qualified for Tokyo 2020, now scheduled to take place in July and August 2021, are Oumaima El Bouchti (-49 kilograms), Nada Laaraj (-57kg) and Achraf Mahboubi (-80 kg).

The three athletes participate in two remote coaching sessions a day, including a physical conditioning session in the morning followed by a technical session in the evening, reports Morocco World News.
