The Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) will ask the Sports Ministry to review its suspension of the body after the lockdown imposed in the country because of the coronavirus is lifted, according to President Deepa Malik.

The coronavirus-led lockdown in India has added to the troubles for the embattled PCI, which is beginning to emerge from its own crisis after Malik was elected President in February.

Paperwork confirming the Rio 2016 silver medallist as the new President has been delayed due to the pandemic, however, meaning the PCI's status with the Sports Ministry is unchanged.

Malik, the only Indian woman to win a medal at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro when she claimed silver in the shot put F53 event, had highlighted the resumption of Sports Ministry grants as one of her main targets.

The 49-year-old World Championships silver medallist had also hoped banks would activate accounts frozen in October, but the COVID-19 pandemic has stalled both key objectives for the PCI.

India's Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports suspended the PCI last September after it found the body to be in violation of good governance practices and its own constitution.

The lockdown in India, which has reported just shy of 28,000 cases and over 884 deaths from the virus, is set to be lifted on Sunday (May 3).

"Immediately after the lockdown ends, we will speak to the legal cell of the bank as the court has allowed us to run PCI," Malik said, according to the Hindustan Times.

"We will also request the Sports Ministry to review the situation and grant funds for the camps."
