This year's African Women's Handball Championship in Cameroon has been rescheduled for June 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The African Handball Confederation (CAHB) decided to move the event in Yaoundé from its planned December 2 to 12 slot.

A qualifier for the 2021 Women's World Handball Championship, the tournament is now set to take place a month before the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are now scheduled to run from July 23 to August 8 2021.

Angola are the only African team to have confirmed a place in the women's handball tournament at the Games, pushed back by a year due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Senegal could join Angola as they are due to compete in one of three Olympic qualifiers in March.

The CAHB has also postponed the Men’s African Junior Championship and the equivalent competition for youth.

Both events, set to be hosted by Morocco, have been moved from September to December.

The youth tournament has been scheduled for December 6 to 12, with the youth event following from December 13 to 19.

According to latest figures, at least 6.7 million people have been infected with COVID-19, resulting in over 394,000 deaths.
