The Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB) has announced that it will suspend all activities at its Training Center in Sao Paulo due to its athletes being in the higher risk category, as the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact the country.

Those more susceptible to severe symptoms if contaminated with the virus include those with spinal cord injuries, those with neurological and pulmonary diseases, paralysed brain activity and those who are immuno-compromised.

This includes a large group of Paralympic athletes in the country who train or regularly attend the Paralympic Training Center in Sao Paulo.

Brazil is one of the worst-hit nations when it comes to the COVID-19 pandemic, with more than 650,000 confirmed cases, resulting in the deaths of over 35,100 people - the third highest number of fatalities globally.

Earlier in the week, CPB also cancelled the School Paralympics which had been scheduled to take place in the second week of November.

The schools associated with the Paralympic Training Center which also brought together more than 600 children from Sao Paulo and neighbouring areas, will be suspended until March 2021.

More than 300 employees of the CPB have been working from home since March due to the pandemic.

In a statement, CPB said: "We reiterate that the reopening of the Training Center should take place at the moment that there is health security to guarantee the free movement of people.

"To this end, the CPB medical department prepares a protocol for resuming activities that should be released to the public in the coming days."
