The British Ice Skating Board said the "difficult decisions" were taken due the coronavirus pandemic and uncertainty caused by the crisis.

Athlete safety, travel restrictions, quarantine and operational requirements specified under Government guidance were among the factors considered.

The British Figure Skating Championships were scheduled to take place in November and December.

The British Short Track Championships were due to follow in January.

The events were due to form part of the qualification window for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

The Britannia Cup, which would have incorporated the British Synchronised Skating Championships, has also been cancelled.

British Ice Skating has said it aims to provide other domestic competitive events or virtual events to support athletes when it is possible to do so.

A review of the situation will be conducted in November.

British Ice Skating said it was disheartened by the news ice rinks were not permitted to open, as was originally planned on August 1.

Ice rinks, casinos and bowling alleys were among the venues expected to open at the start of the month, before the British Government postponed the lifting of restrictions on the venues due a rise in coronavirus cases in the country.

No date has yet been set for the potential reopening of the venues.
