If Carrillo is to be successful in his bid to make the Olympics, he will be the first Mexican figure skater to compete at the Games since Albertville 1992.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Carrillo has had to train at a coach's home for several months.

"In the quarantine we adapted a space in my house in León, Guanajuato, to be able to carry out the training, we acquired a harness in the United States, by parcel," national coach Gregorio Núñez said.

"This helped to continue practising the rotation in the air, which Donovan needs to win for the triple and quadruple jumps, with this we work position, rotation speed, technique in the air, to have the same sensations as when he jumps, these are tools so that he can work that part off the ice.

"We also acquired some spinners, which are a tool for him to learn to turn on the ground the positions that he makes in his turns on the ice, that is how we have also been working."

Since it re-opened, Carrillo and Núñez have been able to train on a rink in Monterrey, but are now relocating to Mexico City to continue their work on a different rink now open with anti-coronavirus measures.

Carrillo is one of the nation's best prospects in Winter Olympic sports, becoming the first Mexican skater to qualify for the final of a senior World Championship.

Last year, Carrillo became the first Mexican to land a triple axel spin in an official International Skating Union competition.

Carrillo is also the first athlete in a winter discipline to receive a scholarship from the Fund for High Performance Sports of Mexico's National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport.

If he is to qualify for Beijing 2022, he will be Mexico's first Olympic figure skater since Riccardo Olavarrieta and Mayda Navarro, who competed in the men's and women's competitions respectively in 1992.

To date, Mexico has not won a Winter Olympic medal.

Beijing 2022 is scheduled to take place from February 4 to 20 2022.
